How is training conducted?

On Tuesday nights, from 6pm to 8:30, we hold our weekly 'parades' - meetings where we learn the bulk of our cadet training, As a cadet, you are posted to one of three training platoons within the company. Each platoon consists of cadets, as well as their respective command team - section commanders, a platoon sergeant and platoon commander.

Training on Tuesday nights is platoon based, and the evening is split into three periods, usually with a different aspect of training every period. All lessons for all platoons are written onto training programs.

The recruit training platoon, 3-Platoon, consists of newly-joined members of the unit. Usually, they get taught the basics of being a cadet - more depth is covered in the 'New Recruits' section of this site. The intermediate training platoon, 2-Platoon, contains the graduates of the recruit course; here cadets move onto a survival core topic, as well as working towards harder drill movements. The senior training platoon, 1-Platoon, is a one-year course, as opposed to the previous two platoons, which are 6-month courses. Here, cadets focus on developing leadership qualities, in preparation for their potential promotion.

And what might you learn?

The stuff taught on Tuesday parade nights depends on what platoon you're in. 3-Platoon goes through their basic cadet training. Lessons include basic drill, cadet background, navigational theory and basic first aid. 2-Platoon mostly focuses on survival theory, but also marching drill, military history and some other interesting stuff. 1-Platoon works on the principles of leadership, developing techniques for lesson-giving, leading a section, and giving orders. They also learn about important military events, and some of the consequences of these battles.
