What are Promotions Courses for?

The NSW AAC Brigade Promotions Courses are seven-day events where aspiring cadets receive training in junior and senior leadership. Three courses are available in NSW: Junior Leaders, Senior Leaders Module 1 and Senior Leaders Module 2. Cadets complete these courses progressively, and on completion are eligible for promotion up to the respective rank: Junior Leaders course is for aspiring corporals, Senior Leaders 1 is for sergeants and Senior Leaders 2 is for Warrant Officers and Cadet Under Officers.

The courses are held at least twice a year at the Singleton Military Area, at Centre Ridge Barracks. They are live-in courses, which cover aspects of leadership including qualities of leaders, lesson planning and field leadership. Aside from the leadership training, the courses are an experience where cadets from 206 ACU work with other cadets from all over the state. Entry to these courses is by selection.

In the past five years, 206 ACU cadets have been awarded the Students of Merit awards from all three courses; two cadets have been nominated to carry the Duke of Edinburgh's Banner (arguably the most prestigious honours in the AAC), and three cadets have been selected to be staff members on the courses.

What other courses are available?

Aside from promotions courses, cadets offers opportunities to take part in many specialist courses - most of which you will walk away from with a recognised certificate of attainment.

On AFX, there is an opportunity to undertake specialist courses in First Aid, Ratel and Quartermaster store management. Graduates of the first aid course walk away with a Senior St John's certificate; also available are bush equivalents of this course.

At battalion level, instructor development courses are run, to prepare cadets as potential junior leaders course candidates. This course was first trialled at a Battalion level in January 2009, with members of 22 AAC BN as its candidates - it was a resounding success.
